Are borders necessary? Mobility and Human Rights.

  • XXIII Foro FHZ
    XXIII Foro FHZ
XXIII Forum of the Foundation Hugo Zárate, which this year concerns borders, migration and refuge. Lecture by Ángeles Solanes, Professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Valencia (UV) followed by a colloquium entitled “At the other side of the border. Migration and refuge experiences” conducted by Albert Mora Castro, PhD and teacher at the UV Department of Sociology and Social Antropology.

Within societies pierced by human mobility in every one of its facets, the idea of border is becoming more and more prominent. This notion not only entails the physical walls separating and distinguishing those who are inside or outside, but also those figurative borders built at the expense of the fragmentation of common and shared values which lead to refuse rights and at the expense of the strengthening of identities intentionally presented as dangerous. In this context, is the border a necessary device? Is its current definition compatible with human rights? Or rather, in the border, the fear is nothing but the pretext to an intended legitimization of violence?
